It would probably not occur to most to look in Psalms for Advent meditations. However, the Psalms are full of them. Advent is all about hope and expectancy in the midst of affliction, and the Psalms abound with expressions of longing for divine deliverance.
Like the psalmist, we groan, cry and pray to God for deliverance from the evil, wickedness, lies, injustice, and oppression that threaten to destroy us. We long for vindication against our enemies and we wrestle with God when He seems silent, slow, or invisible at our times of greatest distress.
Nevertheless, again like the psalmist, we persist in our appeal to God because God is our King, refuge, hope and joy. We know that the Lord is gracious and loving, and that He responds to our prayers with righteousness, protection and sustenance.
The faithful always cling to God’s prophetic Word, since it is God’s sure promise of deliverance. The announcement of judgment against the wicked and the promise of salvation for the righteous both find their fulfillment in Christ. Therefore, just as the ancients longed for his coming, we now long for his second coming, the consummation of all that he promised to do in salvation and judgment. Advent is the time to renew our commitment to wait patiently and expectantly for our coming Lord.
